Southie Summer Tourney! July 12/13

Boston will be hosting a summer tournament this year, to be held in Columbus Park in South Boston! Double-elimination tournament on July 12, and grudge matches and pick up games on the 13th. Sponsors include Revolution, Trimount Iron Works, Geekhouse, and Boston Biker, with more to be announced. There will be prizes and trophies and glory! More details will be coming soon!

The courts are located in Columbus Park. This is a sweet spot – it’s a standard full size street hockey rink with bleachers on one side. It’s right in the middle of the park – right next to the ocean – and also right next to the beach snack shops. Sweet! Click on the image below for a google map with all the courts marked.

Exploration Brigade

Who wants to take a ride to check out some different courts this week or weekend? The last time we did this we had a lot of fun and found some interesting places. I really enjoy the Allston court and all its benefits, but I think we should find a place that’s a little more visible. When we played in the North End this winter there were a lot of random people asking how often we played and expressed interest in playing themselves. These curious onlookers are exactly what Boston bike polo needs.

Lights Out New York City and The Beginning of Summer

This weekend there is a tourney in NYC; it should be lots of fun (even if we lose hard). We’ve been practicing quite a bit since the weather has turned, and I think that it shows. Our biggest detriment is we need MORE PLAYERS, more people that will show up and dedicate a little time to this goofy pseudo sport. Being able to play with your team confidently and smoothly is the key. So next weekend when the weather is beautiful and you don’t have anything to do on a Sunday, come to Lower Allston and experience all that is bike polo.

If someone said it’s possible to interconnect the three most significant greenways in Boston what would you say? If someone told you that there was a 2 1/2 acre park with water views in Downtown Boston that few know about and no one goes to would you believe them? Come learn about plans to reconnect three of Boston’s most important greenways: the Emerald Necklace, the Charles River Basin, and the Southwest Corridor and, in the process, reclaim a lost park overlooking the Charles River.

On a similar subject, Toronto cycling activists built their own network. The excerpt below is from streetsblog.org

Fed up with city government, which is two years behind schedule implementing a 1,000 kilometer bicycle network, Toronto’s Other Urban Repair Squad have begun striping their own bike lanes — in hot pink.

Caused by Jon, suffered by Tim. Where the hell is this bruise? I just can’t get enough of this. Send more pics of your battle scars, I know you have them.

Night Games are Back!!

Tonight was the first time this spring that we’ve stayed late to play under the lights in Allston. It was a perfect night with cool weather. There was a pretty good turnout, and it was nice to show up a little late and see a game underway. When Aaron rode up unexpectedly, we even had some team practice.

The lights stay on till 11pm but we usually start around 6pm. We will be out there every Wednesday. Everyone is welcome.

Sick turnout! This was such a blast and we will be throwing Boston mini-tourneys all summer long, hopefully one a month.

Team night moves to the weekend – mini tourney!

Mini Tourney 5/10, register at noon and play at 12:30. Round robin format means all teams play the same number of games! This tournament is open to local Boston players of all levels – newbies and all stars.

One team currently registered is claiming that they can destroy any other Boston team. Who wants to challenge?

To be held at the Allston courts. click for a google map of all polo spots.
